Prevalence of depressive symptoms and its correlates

Abstract
Finding and treating depression early can improve general prognosis of physical disease. The purpose of this study was to find prevalence of possible depressive symptoms and correlates of possible depressive symptoms to suggest baseline data. The study subjects were 690. residents, 337(48.8%) male, 353(51.2%)female of urban area of Jeju city and data was gathered from trained interviewer using CES-D and questionnaire about sociodemographic factors and health behavior. Possible depressive symptom was defined as CES-D total score over 16. Prevalence of possible depressive symptom in urban Jeju city was 10.9% in total, 7.7% among male. 14.0% among female. Risk factor of depressive symptoms were monthly income and perceived health status. sex, marital status and drinking habit was not statistically significant risk factors. With intensive mental health service for those who are in low socioeconomic class and those who have poor health behavior. early detection of depressive symptom from community will be important to improve general health status.
