Abstract |
Dipeptidyl peptidase IV (DPP-IV; also known as CD26) is a 110 kDa surface glycoprotein with dipeptidyl peptidase activity, with its expression on endothelial, epithelial, and T cells. It has a high selectivity for peptides with a proline or alanine at the second position and cleaves off dipeptides at the amino-terminus of such peptides, including GLP-l, GIP, neuropeptides, and cytokines. It also has a multitude of biological functions except for its intrinsic enzymatic activity. Especially, DPP-IVs immune regulation has been studied for several decades about T cell activation before the introduction of DPP-IV inhibitor as an antidiabetic agent. However, further researches are required to understand the function of the molecule in relation with metabolic syndrome and inflammation. This article describes our current understanding of the biological involvement of DPP-IV enzyme family. |
